Manchester United announced the signing of Cameroonian midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton. The club said it had signed the 22-year-old on a contract through June 2031, with an option to extend the agreement for one additional season.
Completion of the transfer is subject to the conclusion of the player's registration formalities. Baleba's contract can be extended by another year if both parties agree.
His performance at Brighton
Baleba moved from French club Lille to Brighton in 2023. The Cameroonian made 112 appearances in all competitions during his three seasons with the English club, scoring four goals and providing two assists.
The midfielder made 31 appearances in the English Premier League last season. Baleba missed part of the campaign while representing Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations, held in Morocco in December and January.
Transfer fee not disclosed
Baleba had been linked with Manchester United since last year after his performances for Brighton. At the time, Brighton's demand for a transfer fee of approximately 120 million euros prevented the move from going through.
Manchester United did not disclose the financial details of the latest agreement. Reports in the English media put the transfer fee at approximately 81.8 million euros.
Manchester United's third midfield signing
Baleba became the third midfielder Manchester United have signed during this summer's transfer window. The club had previously reached agreements with Andre Santos and Youri Tielemans.
These transfers followed the departure of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro and a serious knee injury suffered by Uruguay's Manuel Ugarte.
