Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş, who resigned from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and said he would continue in politics as an independent, responded to questions about a possible candidacy. “If anyone tells me on what date the election will be held, I will say something accordingly,” he told reporters at the opening of the 29th International Beypazarı Festival.
“There is no election, nothing. I am the mayor of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality. My priority is to continue my job,” Yavaş said.
He also said the country’s economic hardship and the difficulties faced by retirees deserve more public attention, before touring the stands at the festival.
Yavaş announced on September 23 that he had resigned from the CHP and would continue his political path independently. Eight district mayors in Ankara who back him also left the party.
