The Mauritania-Turkey Education and Culture Forum began in the capital Nouakchott. The two-day forum is being held at the Diplomatic Academy under the slogan "Partnership for a Shared Future in Education and Culture."
Ministers, government officials and academics from Mauritania and Turkey attended the forum. An exhibition titled "Mauritania in the Ottoman Archives" was also opened at the inauguration.
Turkey's Deputy Minister of National Education Cihad Demirli said in his speech that the friendly relations between Turkey and Mauritania have begun to bear fruit, especially in the fields of education and culture. Demirli stressed that Mauritania, with its deep-rooted scientific heritage, is one of the leading centers of Islamic civilization.
Demirli also outlined existing areas of cooperation between the two countries, such as Turkish Maarif Foundation schools, Turkish language education, scholarship programs and developing inter-university relations.
Mauritania's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Yakup Ould Amin drew attention to the depth of historical relations between the two countries. He stated that the forum reflects the will of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to advance bilateral cooperation.
Minister Amin announced that the parties reached a preliminary agreement on establishing a Turkish university and a vocational training school in Mauritania. He also said that support will be provided for the opening of a National School of Architecture in Nouakchott in cooperation with Yıldız Technical University.
Turkey's Ambassador to Mauritania Burhan Köroğlu stated that the forum is a solid step strengthening the bridges of friendship between the two peoples and countries. Noting that Turkey-Mauritania relations are constantly developing in political, economic, educational and cultural fields, Köroğlu stressed that Ankara sees Mauritania as a strategic partner.
The ambassador noted that the partnership in education is of special importance, and that Mauritanian students studying in Turkey will become the future academics and pioneers of their country. Köroğlu added that Mauritania's deep-rooted history in Islamic civilization and its unique heritage add a further depth to bilateral ties.
Mauritania-Turkey relations gained momentum after President Erdoğan's visit to Mauritania in 2018, which was the first visit by a Turkish president to the country.
