The Formula E championship, which McLaren is no longer part of, fined the former team 400 thousand euros. The decision was made after McLaren Formula E Team exceeded the cost cap in the 2024-25 season.
From the official summary by the series, the violation was described as a "small scale overspend." The majority of the excess was related to the regular closure process expenses following the team's decision to end its participation in the championship.
Cost cap exceeded by 4.54%
According to official records, McLaren's reported expenditure was 12,802,394 pounds. The upper limit set for the same period was 12,246,766 pounds. Thus, the spending difference reached 555,628 pounds.
It was stated that the violation corresponded to 4.54% of the cost cap. McLaren Electric Racing Ltd officially accepted this small overspend by signing an Accepted Breach Agreement.
It was revealed that the company affiliated with the team voluntarily reported the situation to the cost cap management before any formal investigation began. The assessment indicated no signs that the company acted maliciously, fraudulently, or deliberately concealed information.
Penalty and additional obligations
McLaren must pay the 400 thousand euros within 30 days. The company will also cover the reasonable costs of the cost cap administration related to preparing the agreement.
McLaren also waived the right to appeal or make any other legal claims against the Accepted Breach Agreement.
Similar sanctions in Formula E
Previously, Porsche, Jaguar, and Nissan faced sanctions under the Formula E cost cap. Nissan and Jaguar received sporting penalties in the first cost cap season of 2022-23; both teams were given a half-day ban on the first day of the official pre-season test at Jarama.
Nissan was also fined 300 thousand euros for an overspend below 2%. Jaguar faced a financial penalty of 100 thousand pounds for a 0.6% violation.
How McLaren left Formula E
The McLaren Formula E team, known as NEOM McLaren, originated from the Mercedes EQ team that won the 2021 and 2022 world championships. After Mercedes announced its departure from Formula E in August 2021, the team continued to compete as a customer team with Nissan infrastructure during the Gen3 era.
During this period, Stoffel Vandoorne's 2022 championship win in Seoul was Mercedes' last major success in Formula E. The team management reached an agreement to use the McLaren brand as the race name; René Rast and Jake Hughes replaced Nyck de Vries and Vandoorne.
In the first season, the team achieved pole positions and podiums. Sam Bird secured the team's only Formula E victory by overtaking Mitch Evans on the last lap in São Paulo in March 2024.
In January 2025, rumors began spreading that NEOM might reduce its involvement with the team. In spring, it was announced that McLaren would leave at the end of the 2025 season.
Team principal Ian James made a renewed effort to continue operations, but the planned connection with the Stellantis group did not materialize at the final stage. It was reported in June that time had run out, and the following month McLaren began gradually shutting down operations.
With the license returned to Formula E Operations, the team ceased activities, reducing the number of cars in the championship from 22 to 20 for the current season.
