Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized that Europe must form a stronger and more robust component within NATO, speaking after the five-nation summit held in the German capital Berlin.
The meeting brought together the leaders of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Poland, with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also joining online. Meloni said, "Europe must take on its responsibilities in defense and security and move decisively toward building a stronger and more robust European component within NATO."
Stating that this process should be carried out in a complementary manner with the United States, Meloni noted that the Ukraine file was one of the most important agenda items of the summit. She said the five countries would continue their support for Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved.
Commenting on the Middle East, the Italian Prime Minister said the understanding reached between the United States and Iran was a positive sign for everyone. Pointing to the fragility of the situation in the region, Meloni said efforts should be made to consolidate stability. Emphasizing that the security of international maritime corridors, including the nuclear file, regional stability and freedom of navigation, is of central importance, Meloni stated that the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic priority for everyone and expressed Italy's readiness to help in this regard.
