German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte were booed by protesters in Münster on October 1 after NATO was awarded the International Prize of the Peace of Westphalia.

When the dignitaries stepped onto the balcony of the Historic City Hall, protesters on the square whistled and chanted "blood on your hands." Merz defended the award, saying a peace prize for a military alliance "may seem contradictory at first glance, but is in fact logical," while Rutte said Putin "wants to intimidate and divide us, but he will fail."
