Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made assessments to an Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondent in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, where he was attending the Fourth Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. Fidan noted that they have been engaged in intensive diplomatic traffic in Cairo for two days, stating that yesterday Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the US held an important meeting on Libya.
Fidan stated that within the scope of the meeting, topics such as Libya, the Mediterranean, and Africa were also brought to the agenda, adding, 'There was a very good exchange of views among the four countries. There were discussions that led us to reach certain agreements on certain issues.'
Mentioning that he was received today by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Fidan said, 'We had the opportunity to hear from him, to some extent, the positive results demonstrated by the format we created and came together as these four countries. We also had the opportunity to convey the messages and greetings of our President to him.'
Fidan drew attention to the fact that the foreign ministers of the four countries held a long working session, continuing as follows: 'Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan – these four countries are truly major countries of the region with capacity and responsibility, with large populations, geographies, and capabilities.
Of course, taking ownership of the problems in our region, having these four countries take ownership of the region's political, security, and economic problems and seek solutions, putting forward regional efforts, mobilizing international efforts towards solving the problems here, is currently our greatest endeavor as four countries. Of course, what will the post-war order in the region be like?
In this regard, without a vision being imposed from outside, we, as regional countries, are also striving to put forward a vision in international cooperation. We will also put this forward.' Conveying that they also met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, Fidan stated that during the meeting, relations and issues between the two countries were discussed.
'THERE IS ALWAYS AN ISRAEL WAITING IN THE CORNER'
Fidan drew attention to the fact that the first technical talks regarding the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed between the US and Iran began today in Switzerland, and stated that he discussed this issue over the phone with US President Donald Trump's Special Representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.
Reminding that some articles in the memorandum of understanding signed between the US and Iran were left to be discussed within a 60-day period, Fidan expressed that teams need to work on technical issues related to sanctions and nuclear verification.
Fidan pointed out that political will has been established on important issues between the two countries, stating, 'I believe in the coming days, with intensive work, they will overcome these problems. But let's not forget this always. There are two issues. First, the topics they are discussing. They are truly important topics. Resolving their technical details immediately may not be easy. We may see blockages from time to time.
We must be prepared for this. Secondly, of course, there is always an Israel waiting in the corner, waiting to sabotage the issues as soon as it finds the opportunity.'
