Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new domestic and international terminal buildings at Samsun Çarşamba International Airport. Uraloğlu said Samsun is one of the important gateways through which Anatolia opens to the north in the Black Sea region.
Uraloğlu said he had come to Samsun with three pieces of good news, announcing that the foundation had been laid for a new domestic and international terminal building that would increase Çarşamba Airport’s capacity. The minister said that new tram sets would be put into service after the ceremony and that construction would begin on the Samsun City Hospital Tram Line, which is planned to contribute to urban transportation.

Terminal capacity will rise to 3 million passengers
Uraloğlu said the new domestic and international terminal building would be constructed on an area of 29,120 square meters, adding that once the project was completed, the airport’s annual passenger capacity would increase from 2 million to 3 million.
Uraloğlu said the new terminal would provide domestic and international passengers with a more spacious, faster and more comfortable travel experience. He said the project was intended to contribute to Samsun’s potential in air transportation, tourism, trade and logistics.
Number of airports rises to 58
Uraloğlu said Türkiye is located at the center of Europe, Asia and Africa, along flight routes between developed and developing markets. He added that the country enjoys an advantageous position at the center of 67 countries with a combined population of 1.5 billion people within a four-hour flight.
Uraloğlu announced that the number of active airports had risen from 26 in 2002 to 58 through the renovation of 16 inactive airports and the construction of 16 new ones. He said the number of passengers traveling on domestic and international routes had also increased from approximately 34.5 million in 2002 to 247 million in 2025, adding that Türkiye had risen to third place in Europe and seventh place worldwide.
Passenger traffic increases in Samsun
Uraloğlu said demand for air transportation and passenger traffic at Çarşamba Airport had increased significantly, adding that the number of passengers using air travel in Samsun was approximately 175,000 in 2002.
Uraloğlu said the airport served 1.64 million passengers and handled 17,169 aircraft movements last year. He added that projections indicated passenger and aircraft traffic in Samsun could reach up to twice its current level by 2050.
