Muğla Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Aras has resigned from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP). “As of today, I have decided to leave my membership in the Republican People’s Party and continue my duty as an independent. At the root of my decision lie my responsibility to Muğla, the will of our people and the needs of our city,” Aras said in a statement on his account, which he accompanied with a screenshot from the e-Government portal showing that his party membership had ended.
“For some time, I have seen political debates centered on me overshadowing the work we do for our city. I believe these debates do not contribute to Muğla or to our fellow citizens,” he said.
“I do not disregard the past”

Aras said he would treat all residents equally regardless of political views, lifestyle or where they live, and serve all districts fairly. He said he did not disregard the past and respected the effort and friendships built together, adding that his priority is Muğla’s peace, prosperity and future: “My side is Muğla.”
Resignations continue in CHP
Aras, a former mayor of Bodrum, was elected Muğla metropolitan mayor from the CHP in the 2024 local elections with 55.03% of the vote. His resignation is the latest in a series of departures from the party. Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş quit the CHP on Sept. 23, and eight district mayors in Ankara left the party the same day. Bursa Metropolitan Mayor Mustafa Bozbey had also resigned earlier.
