Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his remarks targeting the growth of Britain’s Muslim population.
In an interview with Israel’s Army Radio on Thursday, Netanyahu said, “Britain could be called the Islamic Republic.”
Netanyahu said that someone had told him the first Islamic republic to possess nuclear weapons would be the Islamic Republic of Britain. He then referred to Iran, saying, “We are ensuring that there will not be another republic.”
He also brought up his previous remarks
Netanyahu had previously made similar remarks about Muslims in Europe. In an interview with the American network Fox News in late July, he referred to a person who said they were learning Arabic in order to travel to London and Paris.
Criticism of Muslim politicians
Israel had previously criticized Muslim politicians in Western countries for taking positions such as mayor and member of parliament.
In this context, Tel Aviv had targeted Zohran Mamdani’s election as mayor of New York. Muslim politician Sadiq Khan is serving as mayor of London.
Britain’s Muslim population
About 4 million Muslims live in Britain. This figure corresponds to approximately 6 percent of the country’s total population.
This proportion is based on census data and statistical reports published by the UK Office for National Statistics and the Muslim Council of Britain.
