Reform UK leader and British MP Nigel Farage announced on Tuesday that he had resigned from parliament. Farage said his resignation was aimed at forcing a by-election in the Clacton constituency, and that he would stand again in that election.
Speaking at a press conference broadcast on the Reform UK YouTube channel, Farage said, "Today I am resigning as the MP for Clacton-on-Sea. I am thus triggering a by-election, which I hope will take place shortly."
This will be a by-election of the people against the establishment. A chance to give the entire establishment a two-finger salute, to put them in their place. That is why I will be standing in this by-election.
Farage's resignation follows a series of scandals over gifts he received from wealthy donors while not in office. Farage denied any wrongdoing, saying, "Let me be very clear. I have done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law in any way. I have not misused public money."
The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner's investigation into Farage is ongoing.
In May 2024, weeks before the July election that would return Farage to parliament, he received a $5 million donation from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. Farage and his allies argued that the donation was "unconditional" and that he had not breached Standards rules because he was a private citizen from the time he left parliament in 2021 until his return in 2024.
Farage also stated that security funding was necessary due to the increased nature and frequency of threats to his life. "I will need security for the rest of my life. I cannot express how grateful I am to Christopher Harborne, because I will never have to worry about whether I have the resources," he said.
Referring to years of harassment, Farage said his home had been attacked and that he received "calls for me to be killed online every day." He said he had repeatedly asked the Home Secretary for help but was ignored, leading to significant security bills. He also revealed that his security funding was cut by 70% days after the killing of Charlie Kirk.
Farage's withdrawal as an MP will trigger a by-election, which is usually held within three to four weeks after a written notice is issued by parliament. This means the election could take place in early August.
