Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu, in a written statement on the 10th anniversary of the Osmangazi Bridge, which entered service on July 1, 2016, stated that the bridge reduced the crossing of the Gulf of Izmit to 6 minutes.
Major Savings with the Bridge
Minister Uraloglu emphasized that the bridge, the most important part of the Istanbul-Izmir Highway, reduced the gulf crossing, which previously took about 1.5 hours by car and 45-60 minutes by ferry, to 6 minutes.
Stating that this uninterrupted crossing provides fuel and time savings, Uraloglu said, "With the bridge, approximately 40 billion liras in fuel and 171 billion liras in time savings were achieved in 10 years, reaching a total savings of 211 billion liras. This environmentally friendly advantage also significantly reduces carbon emissions. With the Osmangazi Bridge, we achieved a reduction of 2 million tons of carbon emissions in 10 years."
Technical Specifications and Records
Uraloglu noted that the bridge, built between Dilovası and Hersek Burnu, has a total length of 2,682 meters, and its 1,550-meter main span is among the largest in operation for suspension bridges. He recalled that the project was completed in 39 months.
Stating that the steel wires used in the bridge, when added end to end, reach 84,518 kilometers, a distance long enough to circle the world twice, Uraloglu noted that the 109,490 tons of steel used in construction is equivalent to 73,000 cars. He reported that the deck area of the main span is 96,364 square meters, equivalent to approximately 14 football fields.
World Record on South Viaduct
Referring to the operations carried out on the southern approach viaduct, Uraloglu said the following:
"We carried out the 1,120-meter section of the viaduct using the incremental launching method. The launching operation of the 22,500-ton deck is the world's largest incremental launching operation among steel viaducts. Additionally, we assembled the remaining 127- and 133-meter sections of the deck, weighing 2,300 tons and 2,600 tons, using the heavy lifting method. This also went down in history as the world's largest heavy lifting operation among steel viaducts."
