The Moscow State Institute of International Relations awarded an honorary doctorate to Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The award was presented to Fidan by the university rector Anatoli Torkunov during the ceremony.
The honorary title was given at the institute, one of Russia's most prestigious higher education institutions, coinciding with Fidan's visit to Russia. The institute is known for training experts in diplomacy and international relations.
In his speech at the ceremony, Fidan thanked the institution for the honorary title. He noted that the institute has been educating diplomats, academics, and statesmen for over 80 years, including Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov among its alumni.
Fidan expressed that he sees this award primarily as a symbol of respect for the deep-rooted relations between Turkey and Russia and the mutual understanding between the two peoples.
He stated that the relations between the two countries have been shaped by history, have endured crises, and continue today through high-level dialogue and cooperation. Fidan also emphasized that the importance of this relationship has increased amid growing global uncertainty.
Fidan highlighted the emergence of a multipolar world order and noted that the transition between the old and new systems carries significant risks. He also drew attention to developments exerting pressure on regional countries.
He said the conflict involving the US and Israel on one side and Iran on the other has challenged many countries in the region in various ways. The agreement reached between Washington and Tehran has provided some relief, he added.
Fidan explained that Turkey has been actively working with regional countries to achieve this outcome and will continue to support the implementation of the agreement aimed at reducing tensions.
Founded in 1944 and granted university status in 1994, the institute is considered one of the most renowned centers for foreign policy education in Russia and Eurasia. Its alumni include Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and Sergey Lavrov.
The institute has previously awarded honorary doctorates to figures such as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
