Serbia's President Vučić announced during a television program that he would resign from the presidency on September 27. Vučić said he would address the public that same evening and thank those who had supported him.
Vučić said he was the longest-serving president in office since Serbia transitioned to a multiparty system. He said this achievement would not have been possible without the support of the country's citizens, adding that he had served Serbia and its people with loyalty, hard work and dedication.
He will join the election campaign as a citizen
Announcing that he would join the campaign for the snap general election scheduled for October 25 as an ordinary citizen after his resignation, Vučić said he had bought a small truck, a car and a caravan for the campaign.
Vučić said he would travel to the country's most remote villages, stay in the caravan until late at night in the places he visits and that thousands of villages he had not yet visited remained. He also said he wanted to tour the cities.
SNS targets more than 50 percent of the vote
Vučić said the Serbian Progressive Party would hold rallies in major cities, particularly the capital Belgrade, as part of its election campaign. He added that he believed his party deserved to receive more than 50 percent of the vote.
