Serena Williams bowed out of Wimbledon in her first singles match since returning from a break, losing to young Australian Maya Joint 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3.
The 44-year-old Williams played her first professional singles match since announcing she was "stepping away" from the sport in 2022. Despite saving a match point in the second set, she could not maintain her lead in the final set and was eliminated in the first round for the third consecutive time at the All England Club.
20-year-old Maya Joint said she could not sleep until 2:00 a.m. before the match, adding, "The start was very nerve-wracking. When I tried to close out the match, Serena definitely raised her level."
The 23-time Grand Slam champion received a standing ovation on court as spectators held up signs reading "Welcome." The American legend last won Wimbledon 10 years ago, while her most recent Grand Slam title came at the 2017 Australian Open.
Swiatek and Rybakina face challenges
Defending champion Iga Swiatek advanced to the second round with a hard-fought 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Taylor Townsend. The Polish player, who made 16 unforced errors in the second set, managed to win the third set and will face former world number one Karolina Pliskova.
Second seed Elena Rybakina also advanced past 2025 French Open semi-finalist Lois Boisson in three sets. Amanda Anisimova, who lost 6-0, 6-0 to Swiatek in last year's final, defeated North Macedonian Lina Gjorcheska in straight sets.
Zverev wins through three tie-breaks
French Open champion Alexander Zverev defeated Belgian Alexander Blockx 6-4, 6-7 (8/10), 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/0) in a match featuring three tie-breaks to reach the second round. Fourth seed Ben Shelton was eliminated by Finland's Otto Virtanen in a fifth-set tie-break, losing 11/9. Sixth seed Taylor Fritz and fifth seed Alex de Minaur advanced in straight sets.
