On the first day of Wimbledon 2026, defending men's champion Jannik Sinner and women's top seed Aryna Sabalenka responded to criticism in different ways, advancing to the second round.
Sinner, who took the court after a shock defeat to Juan Manuel Cerundolo at the French Open, defeated Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-3 in 3 hours 30 minutes.
The Italian racket started the match poorly and fell into danger after losing the third set, but took control in the final two sets. Sinner, who injured his foot during the match and had blood on his shoe, said after the match: "My game wasn't good, but I'm happy I managed to turn it around. Losing the third set was tough." Sinner added that the foot injury is not serious.
With this win, Sinner won his 94th Grand Slam match, equaling the record held by Italian Nicola Pietrangeli.
Sabalenka advances comfortably
Women's world number one Sabalenka dominated Serbian qualifier Teodora Kostovic, winning comfortably 6-2, 6-3.
Sabalenka, who fell into a "dark mood" after losing the last 10 games against Diana Shnaider in the French Open quarterfinals, found morale with this match.
Major upsets for seeds
The opening day also saw surprise results. In men's, 11th seed Norwegian Casper Ruud bowed to Polish big-server Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(7), while 12th seed Russian Andrey Rublev lost to compatriot Roman Safiullin in five sets after missing match points, falling 14-12 in the final set tie-break.
French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska also bid an unlucky farewell to the tournament. The Polish racket, while holding match point, got injured and lost to Thai Mananchaya Sawangkaew 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Gloomy day for hosts
For British tennis players, the first day of the tournament was a complete disappointment. The hosts, who failed to secure even a single win, suffered consecutive losses in the main draw they started with 21 players.
Emma Raducanu withdrew before the tournament due to injury, while Jack Draper announced he would not play because of an arm injury. Britain's number one Cameron Norrie, participating as the 26th seed, lost to American Michael Zheng after a five-set battle.
Top women's players cruise to victory
Japan's 14th seed Naomi Osaka, who drew attention with her Kill Bill-themed white kimono, defeated Elsa Jacquemot 6-1, 7-5, while American fourth seed Jessica Pegula beat Darja Vidmanova 7-5, 6-3.
New French Open champion Mirra Andreeva continued her path by defeating Magda Linette 7-5, 6-4. Experienced Swiss racket Belinda Bencic also easily passed young British wildcard Mika Stojsavljevic with her experience.
New generation takes the stage
In men's, 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca, with the support of a large group of fans wearing yellow jerseys, eliminated Spanish Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-3. After the match, Fonseca went to watch his compatriots' World Cup match.
Spanish Rafael Jodar, also 19, drew attention by defeating British Felix Gill 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in his first Grand Slam match.
The matchup between former US Open champions Daniil Medvedev and Marin Cilic turned one-sided. Eighth seed Medvedev easily passed 37-year-old Cilic 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 to advance.
