Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar decided to raise the Palestinian flag on the facade of the Presidential Palace in the capital Ljubljana. It was announced that the flag would remain on the building's exterior for one week before being brought inside for display to visitors.
This decision came after the flag was removed from the government center following the appointment of conservative Prime Minister Janez Jansa after the March 22 elections. The flag raised at the Presidential Palace has brought renewed visibility to the political messages surrounding the Palestinian issue in the country.
"It carries political and moral significance"
In her statement, Pirc Musar said this step was intended to support the Palestinian cause and international law. She noted that the Palestinian flag is not only a national symbol but also represents the severe violations of international humanitarian law occurring in Palestine and elsewhere.
The Slovenian President emphasized the ongoing hardships faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. She pointed out that the people of Gaza and the West Bank do not live under conditions that guarantee human dignity, expressing solidarity with the Palestinians.
Pirc Musar described raising the flag on the palace facade as an expression of support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. This decision stands out as one of the most visible symbolic steps by Slovenia's political leadership regarding the Palestinian issue.
