Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited units of the Somali army's Gorgor special forces in Mogadishu. The units trained by Türkiye recently completed their advanced training.
Mohamud met with the soldiers and received briefings from unit commanders and military officials on ongoing activities.
The Somali president also inspected the units' administrative facilities, the soldiers' accommodation, the hospital and logistics centers. He expressed satisfaction with the soldiers' overall condition, the services provided to them and their level of readiness to carry out national duties.
Praising the Gorgor units' role in defending the country and combating the al-Shabaab terrorist organization, Mohamud instructed them to remain prepared to fulfill their constitutional duties. He called on the soldiers to continue working toward the Somali people's goal of achieving a country free from terrorism.
Mohamud thanked the government and people of Türkiye for their continued support in restructuring, training and developing the capacity of the Somali army. He said Türkiye had made significant contributions to establishing and developing special military units such as the Gorgor special forces.
The Gorgor forces, regarded as among the Somali army's elite units, trained at the TURKSOM military training base established by the Turkish Armed Forces in Mogadishu. The training program includes basic and advanced military training, counterterrorism, urban operations, marksmanship, first aid and command exercises.
