South Korean music duo HoonDoo gave its first concert in Turkey in Çanakkale as part of the Türkiye Culture Route Festival. Organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Korean Cultural Center, the concert took place at the İÇDAŞ Kara Yusuf Congress Center.
Before the concert, the group’s members, Lee Seung Hoon and Doo Jin Soo, toured Çanakkale and sampled local delicacies such as sardines, kelle paça, cheese halva and kokoreç. The two artists also shared moments from their time in the city on their social media accounts.
They choose Turkish songs based on fan suggestions
Lee Seung Hoon said they mostly selected Turkish songs based on suggestions from fans on social media. At their fans’ suggestion, the group also performed “We Are Atatürk’s Youth” for Victory Day on August 30.
Lee said they had learned about Atatürk and Turkish history through their fans, adding that they were impressed not only by the anthem’s lyrics but also by the energy of its opening melody. He said comments such as “You have become Turkish now” were among the reactions that affected them most after the recording was released.
Lee said emotions such as sadness and longing were reflected in similar ways in Turkish and Korean music. He described performing in a historically significant city such as Çanakkale as a great source of pride for them.
They experienced Çanakkale’s cuisine
Lee said Çanakkale’s natural surroundings and the happiness and kindness of its people caught their attention, adding that the city differed from Seoul’s busy and complicated urban life. He said they ate kelle paça soup, kokoreç and sardines during their stay and also sampled cheese halva.
Lee said they had gained 2 kilograms since arriving and added that if Koreans were asked, “Which country is your brother country?”, 10 out of 10 would answer “Turkey.”
They want to maintain ties between the two countries through music
Speaking about passing the historical friendship between the two countries on to younger generations through music, Lee said they performed Turkish songs with Korean lyrics and that many young people had shown interest in these projects. He said the group wanted to keep the ties between the two countries alive by continuing to share their work.
Doo Jin Soo said that, in addition to K-pop-focused works, they also performed pop songs using the foundations of their opera training. He said singing in different languages helped them when interpreting Turkish works.
Doo said they gave priority to fan suggestions when choosing the works they would perform. He said they researched the background and story of each suggested song, adding that he focused on the lyrics while Lee focused on the melody.
Doo said the Turkish song he believed best reflected a Korean person’s emotions was “Sarı Gelin.” He said they would also perform with Bayhan as part of the festival, adding that Bayhan had influenced their decision to begin performing Turkish songs and that they would be honored to share the same stage with him.
Doo Jin Soo said everyone in Korea knew about the Korean War and the assistance Turks provided to Koreans, which was why Turkey was regarded as a brother country.
