South Korea’s National Intelligence Service is trying to determine whether North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has a son. If such a person exists, the agency believes he could be Kim Ju-ae’s older brother.
The intelligence service continues to view Kim Ju-ae, who is believed to have been born in 2013, as the most likely candidate for North Korea’s future leadership. The agency assessed that even if the existence of a son were established, he would not be able to succeed his father under current circumstances.
Uncertainty over Kim Jong Un’s other child
South Korean intelligence also believes that Kim Jong Un has a younger child whose sex has not yet been determined. Work continues to establish the number of Kim Jong Un’s children and the potential order of succession.
Kim Ju-ae’s public visibility
Kim Ju-ae has attracted attention since she was first shown in North Korean state media in 2022. She has accompanied her father at various events, including military parades and missile tests.
South Korean intelligence described Kim Ju-ae in January 2024 as the most likely successor to the North Korean leader. The succession debate resurfaced after Kim Jong Un visited, together with his daughter on January 1, a family monument in North Korea that holds symbolic significance for the ruling dynasty.
