Taylor Swift took the stage at the Toy Story 5 premiere to perform the film’s new song live for the first time. Following the premiere, she surprised the audience by performing alongside Randy Newman.
Swift appeared on the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, posing for photos with the film’s cast and Disney executives. She then delivered a brief solo piano performance of her new song for the film, "I Knew It, I Knew You".
This marked Swift’s first time singing in front of a large audience since the finale of her Eras Tour in December 2024. While on stage, she warmly thanked Randy Newman and acknowledged the contributions of those who have worked on the Toy Story films.
Randy Newman Joins the Stage
Newman joined Swift on stage to perform the original Toy Story song "You’ve Got A Friend In Me". The 82-year-old musician, who has been performing less frequently due to recent health issues, made one of his first major public appearances since last year’s John Mulaney show.
During the performance, Swift echoed Newman’s style and the two shared a brief, warm exchange. Newman, who has composed music for all five Toy Story films, is recognized as a key figure in defining the series’ musical identity.
Swift’s new song for the film is also notable as her first original piece created specifically for the Toy Story universe. It is expected to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart next week.
Tom Hanks, the voice of Woody, made a striking comment about the new song. He said that hearing it for the first time felt like "hearing Judy Garland’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow for the first time."
The premiere brought together iconic musicians from two generations on the same stage. Swift’s new Toy Story song became one of the standout moments of the film’s launch event.
