The first official trailer for The Social Reckoning, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, has been released. Jeremy Strong appears as Mark Zuckerberg in the film.
The production is based on Ben Mezrich’s 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires and follows a storyline similar to The Social Network. This time, the film focuses on the whistleblowing process that shook Facebook’s internal workings.
Frances Haugen and the leaked documents take center stage
Mikey Madison portrays Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen in the film. The story depicts Haugen’s 2021 leak of Meta’s internal documents and how these documents exposed some of the platform’s most closely guarded secrets.
The film also features Haugen’s collaboration with journalist Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White.
The rest of the cast and Sorkin’s return
The cast also includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr. This film marks Sorkin’s first feature-length directorial work since Being the Ricardos in 2021.
Sorkin previously won the Adapted Screenplay Oscar in 2011 for The Social Network. With this new film, the impact of Facebook’s transformation into a global company over the years is brought back to the cinematic spotlight.
Release date announced
The film will be released in theaters by Sony starting Friday, October 9. Alongside the first trailer, Jeremy Strong’s portrayal of Zuckerberg has already attracted attention.
Early footage of the production was previously shown at CinemaCon. That presentation described the Zuckerberg character in the film as intense and composed.
