Iran warned that the tension could escalate into a broader conflict following Israeli attacks on Dahieh, a southern suburb of Beirut. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stated that Tehran and its allies would respond with force.
Qalibaf accused the US and Israel of violating ceasefire commitments and undermining diplomatic efforts. The Iranian politician argued that the blockade and breaches of agreements in Lebanon demonstrate that Washington and Tel Aviv do not believe in dialogue.
Strong message regarding US bases
Qalibaf said that if these violations continue, American military bases and interests in the region would become legitimate targets. This statement indicated that Tehran views recent developments not only through the lens of Lebanon but also in terms of regional security balance.
It was also reported that the Iranian Parliament Speaker leads the Iranian delegation in contacts with Washington. Therefore, the statement stood out as a direct message of tension bridging diplomatic channels and military escalation on the ground.
Alert level raised on Israeli front
The Israeli army stated that the attack on Dahieh hit a "high-value" target and was in response to Hezbollah rockets fired at Israeli settlements. Israeli media reported that the army has moved to the highest alert level in anticipation of a possible Iranian response.
Yedioth Ahronoth wrote that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet late at night with Defense Minister Israel Katz and senior security officials. The meeting will address threats originating from Lebanon and Iran.
The attack on Dahieh and the subsequent strong statements signaled a renewed escalation of tensions in the region. Messages from the parties increased the risk that the conflict along the Lebanon front could expand into a broader regional issue.
