At Tuesday's UN General Assembly session on the US embargo against Cuba, the Cuban delegation began shouting and banging on desks when US Permanent Representative to the UN Mike Waltz was about two and a half minutes into his speech.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla went to the podium to raise a point of order, and the session chair briefly suspended the meeting. Waltz told Rodríguez, "Step back, ambassador. This is not Havana. This is the United Nations, not your communist dictatorship."
Rodríguez, who intervened several times, accused Waltz of "lying in a crude manner" and of "dishonoring" the Cuban people and government. Waltz objected to Cuba's use of the term "blockade," saying, "A blockade is a ring of military ships around an island. There is no such thing."
A non-binding Cuban draft resolution calling for the embargo to be lifted will be put to a vote on Wednesday. Cuba is bringing the draft to the General Assembly for the 34th time since 1992; last year, it passed with 165 votes in favor, 7 against and 12 abstentions.
