Voting has begun in Israel's general election. The country has 7.3 million voters, 1.2 million of whom are of Palestinian origin.
More than 30 parties and lists are competing in the election to surpass the 3.25% threshold and win seats in the 120-member parliament, the Knesset. Recent polls show that 11 to 12 parties are likely to clear the threshold.

The election is expected to be a close race between incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot. Opinion polls indicate that no party will reach the 61 seats needed to form a government.
The election follows four years in which the Netanyahu-led government carried out attacks in the region. It is the first general election held on schedule since 1988.
