The 31st Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival opened in the northern Moroccan city of Tetouan. Countries from the Mediterranean region, including Türkiye, attended the ceremony held on Saturday evening.
The opening featured a creative performance titled İnzıyah, directed by Moroccan theater artist Yasin Ahcam.
Ten films from nine countries to compete
Ten films from nine countries will compete in the festival's feature-film competition. Films from Türkiye, Spain, Croatia, Italy, Portugal, France, Palestine, Tunisia and Morocco are taking part.

Sharafat Efilal, president of the Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival Foundation, said the festival was the oldest national cinema window onto the Mediterranean. Efilal said the festival's main aim was to turn cinema into a platform for coexistence and tolerance in the Mediterranean.

Efilal said Mediterranean cinema had long faced major production problems and limitations in distribution, adding that art, and cinema in particular, was the strongest language for defending tolerance, coexistence and human values.
Screenings and workshops to be held
The festival, which will run until October 10, will address the problems facing cinema in the Mediterranean region and the transformations it has undergone. Alongside film screenings, the program will include discussions and workshops focused on these issues.
