The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has asked the Treasury and Finance Ministry for permission to investigate İbrahim Ömer Gönül, who headed Türkiye’s Capital Markets Board (SPK) from April 2022 to April 2026, for "misconduct in office," citing "clear and sufficient indications" that he failed to fulfill his duties in supervising investment funds. Four separate investigations into alleged market manipulation through portfolio management firms and funds are under way.
Following the prosecutor's request for permission to investigate, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek on Friday tasked the ministry's Inspection Board, in line with the relevant legislation, with conducting a preliminary examination and inquiry as part of the fund investigation.
