Turkish Football Federation board member Mevlüt Aktan announced his resignation from the federation. Aktan argued that the current leadership had failed to demonstrate the necessary knowledge, experience, vision and organizational competence.
Aktan said all of the federation’s departments and staff should be restructured on the basis of merit, transparency and accountability. He said promises made to general assembly delegates had not been fulfilled.
He said his views found no support within the leadership
Aktan said regulations expected by the clubs, which would enhance the brand value of Turkish football and strengthen its economic structure, had not been implemented. He said his efforts in this direction had found no support within the leadership and that the will to pave the way for fundamental changes had not been demonstrated.
Arguing that decisions were being made within a narrow circle and that different views were not given sufficient room, Aktan said the Turkish Football Federation could not be run with a “family business mentality.”
Call for change in the football climate
Aktan said the football climate in Türkiye needed to change, adding that rhetoric fueling tensions, betting debates and allegations of irregularities had undermined trust. He said irregularities must be addressed, but warned that publicly exposing individuals through press statements before judicial proceedings are concluded could harm clubs, football workers and ongoing legal processes.
Aktan said quality standards should be established in every area of football, including player development and club management, and that joint steps should be taken with the relevant public institutions.
Call for an extraordinary general assembly
Aktan said he had opposed decisions he considered wrong within the leadership for nearly two years and had worked to prevent decisions that could harm Turkish football. He announced that he was resigning because he could no longer continue this effort within the institution.
Aktan said he believed the current leadership had become dysfunctional and called on it to resign. He also asked all board members to resign and general assembly members to begin the necessary process for convening an extraordinary elective general assembly.
