The 38th Bosphorus Intercontinental Swimming Race will be held in Istanbul's Bosphorus on August 23. The race will start in Kanlıca and finish at Kuruçeşme Cemil Topuzlu Park.
Şenol Güneş said that 2,500 athletes would take part in the event. Güneş said 1,250 of the participants would be Turkish and 1,250 would be foreign athletes, adding that swimmers from a total of 64 countries would be hosted in Istanbul.
The course will run from Kanlıca to Kuruçeşme
The race's traditional course will be 6.5 kilometers long. After gathering at Kuruçeşme Cemil Topuzlu Park, participants will be taken to Kanlıca on two City Lines ferries, where the race will begin.
Swimmers will cross the Bosphorus with Asia on one side and Europe on the other throughout the course. Two-way maritime traffic on the Bosphorus will be suspended during the race.
The race has been held since 1989
The Bosphorus Intercontinental Swimming Race began in 1989 with 200 athletes. Registration for this year's race opened in January, and qualifying events were held in four or five provinces, including Ankara, İzmir and Istanbul.
Güneş said athletes who want to swim in the Bosphorus must meet a certain performance level. Swimmers taking part in the race must be licensed and submit documents showing that they have previously participated in another race.
Participation was limited for security reasons
Güneş said they had received strong demand from abroad and announced that they had limited the quota because of the course's length and the need to control the race. The event aims to provide athletes with a safer and more comfortable experience.
Athletes will use safety buoys in this year's race. The organizers will provide the buoys, and more than 100 boats will be deployed to track the swimmers.
Thirty-one stakeholder institutions will take part
The event will be carried out in coordination with a total of 31 stakeholder institutions, alongside the Coast Guard Command, the Coastal Safety Directorate and police units. The Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Istanbul Governorship, the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports, and the Turkish Swimming Federation will also take part in managing the event.
Güneş said the race had become an internationally recognized event and contributed to sports tourism. He said some participants arrive in Istanbul two or three days before the race to explore the city, adding that the event had previously received the title of "Best Race" at open-water events.
