UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih said that more than 117 million people worldwide had been forced to leave their homes because of conflict, violence, persecution and security threats.
Salih briefed the UN Security Council on developments concerning forced displacement. Saying that the number of conflicts continued to rise, Salih said crises were lasting longer and that political solutions were often not being found.
Salih said millions of people who had left their homes in the hope that the crises would be temporary remained displaced for years, and in some cases for several generations.
Emphasizing that forced displacement was not merely a humanitarian issue, Salih said it also posed a threat to international peace and security.
