The Osun State Police Command announced that three suspected group members were detained in separate operations, and a large number of weapons and various criminal elements were seized.
The police stated that the suspects' connections to political thuggery and other criminal activities are also being investigated. The operations were carried out during inspections and intelligence work conducted across the state.
First Detention Made During Road Check
Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said the detentions were announced in a statement issued on behalf of Commissioner Ibrahim Gotan. The first operation took place on May 22 during a routine road check by a patrol team affiliated with the Ikirun Area Command.
According to the police, the patrol team stopped Adekola Olayinka Abdulazeez, who was riding an unregistered motorcycle. A search uncovered two Beretta pistols, an axe, and talismans.
Following the incident, the case file was referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more detailed examination. During the investigation, Abdulazeez reportedly identified himself as a member of a sect organization.
Two More Suspects Apprehended
The police statement reported that during Abdulazeez's interrogation, he named Omolara Ezekiel and Babatunde Azeez as accomplices. It was also stated that the suspect was caught while attempting to deliver the weapons to another group member.
Following this information, intelligence efforts led to the detention of Ezekiel and Azeez as well. Searches at addresses believed to be connected to the suspects uncovered four machetes, two axes, and two live cartridges.
The police noted that the second phase of the search also yielded a pistol, a short-barreled firearm, three axes, four machetes, and talismans.
Investigation Continues, Trial Preparations Underway
The command stated that there are other fugitive members and efforts to apprehend them are ongoing. It was indicated that all suspects will be brought to court once the investigation is complete.
The statement also included Commissioner Gotan's warning against political thugs, sect groups, and other criminal elements that could disrupt public order. The police emphasized that such activities threaten public peace.
This development comes ahead of the gubernatorial election scheduled for August 15 in the state. It was recalled that the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke is running for a second term, while the All Progressives Congress has nominated Bola Oyebanji.
As the electoral race in Osun becomes more visible amid the competition for control of the state, the police stressed that monitoring and supervision against groups that could disrupt public order will continue.
