Tom Barrack, the US Special Envoy for Syria, reportedly requested Mazlum Abdi of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDG) to sever all ties with the terrorist organization PKK and to remove PKK-affiliated cadres from Syria. According to a report attributed to Al-Arabiya, this demand coincided with a period when the security dynamics in northern Syria were being reshaped.
According to the information conveyed, Barrack emphasized that the SDG should end its organic links with the PKK and that elements affiliated with this structure should leave the country. The content of the request aligned with sensitivities long expressed by Ankara in the contacts the US has maintained with various groups in Syria.
Ankara's Sensitivity to the PKK
Turkey considers the PKK and its Syrian extension YPG/SDG as threats to its national security and demands that these groups be removed from the border area. This call attributed to Barrack has reignited discussions about the direction of contacts between Washington and Ankara on this issue.
