The TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a written statement regarding the decision adopted by the European Parliament on Cyprus. The statement said: 'We strongly condemn this decision of the European Parliament, which distorts the 1974 Turkish military intervention in Cyprus and targets the Turkish Cypriot people and Türkiye.'
The statement recalled that following the bloody coup carried out on 15 July 1974 by Greece and Greek Cypriot collaborators aiming to destroy the Turkish Cypriots, Türkiye conducted a legitimate intervention on the island on 20 July 1974 in line with its rights and obligations arising from the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee. It emphasized that the operation conducted by the Turkish Armed Forces not only ensured the safety of the Turkish Cypriot people
but also prevented mass massacres, it was emphasized.
The statement noted that the European Parliament once again overstepped its bounds by making baseless accusations against the heroic Turkish army instead of addressing the atrocities and crimes against humanity committed by Greek Cypriots against the Turkish Cypriot people. It included the following remarks: 'This unacceptable decision of the European Parliament targeting Türkiye will serve no purpose other than contributing to
Greek Cypriot propaganda aimed at deceiving the world. Prior to this pro-Greek Cypriot decision, our female MPs in the TRNC Assembly sent letters to the relevant committee chair in the European Parliament, responding to claims that do not reflect the truth and making intensive efforts to accurately and transparently present the realities on the island.
However, despite all these efforts, the adoption of the decision once again demonstrates that the European Union and its institutions have long lost their neutrality on the Cyprus issue and are acting entirely as spokespersons for the Greek Cypriot side.
The statement declared that such decisions, which ignore the will of the Turkish Cypriot people, disregard their inherent rights, and deliberately distort the realities on the island, are null and void for the TRNC and carry no legitimacy.
The statement also called on the European Parliament to abandon its one-sided approaches, to stop using the Cyprus issue as a tool of political propaganda, and to respect the existing realities on the island and historical facts.
