U.S. President Donald Trump made remarks about Iran at a dinner held at the White House. Trump said the United States had attacked Iran and imposed economic sanctions on the country, adding that these steps were intended to help Israel, the Middle East and U.S. security.
Trump claimed that Iran’s economy had “completely collapsed” following the attacks and sanctions. Saying that about 99 percent of the steps taken by the United States were intended to help the Middle East, Trump argued that Iran would attack some cities in the Middle East, Europe and the United States after Israel was eliminated.

Trump also claimed that the United States controlled the Strait of Hormuz and that oil tankers were currently using the shipping route.
Course of the conflict with Iran
The attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran began on February 28, 2026. During the conflict, the Strait of Hormuz, which is important for oil exports and global supply chains, was closed.
Iran carried out attacks against Gulf countries and locations it described as “targets belonging to the United States and Israel.” The sides later reached a ceasefire.
Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18, 2026, to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic. The memorandum later stalled because of disagreements over its implementation and the security of the waterway.
The conflict resumed in July. U.S. Central Command also announced on Tuesday that it had resumed attacks against targets inside Iran.
