Two Turkish F-16 fighter jets landed at Latvia’s Lielvarde Military Base as part of NATO’s mission to protect the airspace of the Baltic states.
The aircraft arrived in Latvia from Ämari Air Base in Estonia, where Turkey’s contingent is supporting the NATO mission.
Senior officials attend ceremony in Lielvarde
Latvian Defense Minister Raivis Melnis, Türkiye’s Ambassador to Latvia Ahmet Cemil Miroğlu and senior Latvian military officials attended a ceremony held to welcome the aircraft.
Melnis said the presence of Turkish fighter jets in Latvia demonstrated NATO’s readiness to protect the airspace of its allies and respond to potential threats.
Melnis said the presence of allied forces strengthened the security of Latvia and NATO’s eastern flank, while also sending a clear message about the alliance’s unity and the strength of collective defense.
New rotation in Baltic airspace mission
Italy assumed responsibility on July 31 for the new rotation of NATO’s Baltic air-policing mission operating from Šiauliai Air Base in Lithuania. Italy replaced the contingents from France and Romania, which had previously taken part in the mission.
The Italy-led rotation is being carried out with the support of Turkey’s contingent operating from Ämari Air Base in Estonia.
