The Uniting for Consensus (UfC) group, of which Türkiye is a member, reiterated its opposition to the creation of new permanent seats on the UN Security Council at a meeting on September 24 during the high-level week of the 81st UN General Assembly.
In a joint statement, the group advocated abolishing the veto and said members should act together in the immediate term to limit its use “in specific circumstances, such as, but not limited to, mass atrocities and war crimes.”
UfC proposes expanding the Council only through elected members, including longer-term rotating seats. Its members are Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Pakistan, South Korea, San Marino, Spain and Türkiye.
The statement followed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s call at the General Assembly for the veto mechanism to be scrapped. Türkiye has long criticized the Council’s structure under the slogan “The world is bigger than five.”
