Türkiye and Egypt signed a memorandum of understanding to increase cooperation on international transport corridors.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that he met with Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir during the 5th Türkiye Maritime Summit in Istanbul and signed the agreement.
In a post on the İn Social platform, Minister Uraloğlu said: "With this memorandum, we will take joint steps to increase the effective use of international transport corridors, especially the Middle Corridor and the Development Road. We will also strengthen transit transportation."
Middle Corridor and Development Road
The Middle Corridor connects China to Europe via Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye. The route, consisting of 4,256 kilometers of road and railway and 508 kilometers of sea route, reduces delivery time between Europe and Asia to 15 days and turns Türkiye into a trade backbone directly linking it to 21 countries.
The Development Road, starting from Iraq and extending to Türkiye and its ports, stands out as a 1,200-kilometer road and railway project. This route aims to connect Türkiye to Iraq and the Basra Gulf as one of the shortest routes between the Gulf countries and Europe.
Under the memorandum, it was also agreed to develop Ro-Ro lines that carry road vehicles by sea, facilitate shipping operations, and increase passenger and freight mobility.
Maritime Talks with Somalia
During the summit, Uraloğlu also met with Somali Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur and said: "We discussed further developing the strong friendship relations established under the leadership of our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in line with our common goals in the field of maritime and port sectors."
