Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum announced six global climate goals to be achieved by 2035 as Türkiye prepares to preside over the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31).
Speaking at a promotional meeting for Türkiye’s COP31 presidency held in Ankara for representatives of diplomatic missions, Kurum said Türkiye would build the conference presidency on three pillars: “dialogue, consensus and action.”
Kurum said COP31 would not be limited to setting targets but would focus on their implementation on the ground.
Six goals set for 2035
- Raise the share of renewable sources in global electricity generation to 35 percent.
- Halve the increase in global waste.
- Reduce energy consumption in buildings by 25 percent.
- Raise the use of recyclable materials in industry to 15 percent.
- Strengthen climate literacy worldwide.
- Establish a “climate implementation bridge” linking countries in need of support with financing sources capable of providing solutions.
Türkiye is conducting the COP31 process in cooperation with Australia. Kurum called on the private sector, banks and investors to assume greater responsibility for financing the green transition.
COP31 to be held in Türkiye
The 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will be held in Türkiye from November 9 to 20.
Each year, 197 countries discuss emissions reductions, adaptation policies, climate finance, loss and damage mechanisms, and carbon markets at climate conferences. The meetings also address rules for implementing the Paris Agreement.
