Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli announced that they appreciate UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ efforts on Cyprus.
In a statement on his social media account, Keçeli said they value the efforts Guterres has made since taking office to achieve progress on the Cyprus issue.
Pointing out that common ground for a solution between the two sides on the island still does not exist, the spokesperson stated that progress in key areas of cooperation within the framework of the process Guterres launched in 2025 would contribute to building trust between the parties.
“Solution models that have been tried and exhausted for decades are now behind us,” Keçeli said. He emphasized that as long as the Greek Cypriot side does not change its intransigent stance and continues practices that also negatively affect the region’s security, no horizon for a solution will emerge.

Keçeli stated that a fair, comprehensive and sustainable solution can only be possible on the basis of the existing realities on the island and the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people, and reiterated Türkiye’s full support for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot people.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Guterres held a trilateral meeting with TRNC President Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot administration leader Nikos Christodoulides at the UN headquarters in the buffer zone in the capital Nicosia.
