Türkiye's Foreign Ministry remembered with respect and prayers Ahmet Benler, the son of the late Ambassador Özdemir Benler, on the 47th anniversary of his martyrdom. Benler was killed in The Hague on Oct. 12, 1979, in a heinous attack by the terrorist groups ASALA and JCAG.
Ahmet Benler, the only son of Özdemir Benler, who was then Türkiye's ambassador to the Netherlands, was 27 years old at the time of the attack and was pursuing graduate studies in Delft. The Armenian terrorist groups ASALA and JCAG separately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Diplomats and their families targeted

ASALA and JCAG carried out numerous attacks on Turkish diplomats and their families in various countries around the world in the 1970s and 1980s. Dozens of Turkish diplomats and their relatives lost their lives in these attacks.
A year before Ahmet Benler was martyred, Necla Kuneralp, the wife of Ambassador Zeki Kuneralp, lost her life in a 1978 attack in Madrid. The Foreign Ministry commemorates its martyred diplomats and their relatives every year on their anniversaries.
