Türkiye’s Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş and Luxembourg’s Chamber of Deputies President Claude Wiseler discussed bilateral relations and regional issues during their meeting in Ankara. The meeting was held on Thursday as part of Wiseler’s official visit to Türkiye.
Speaking at a news conference after the meeting, Kurtulmuş said the two sides exchanged views on developments in Türkiye, the region and Europe.
Türkiye-Europe relations and the security agenda
Kurtulmuş thanked Luxembourg for being one of the friendly European countries that has supported Türkiye’s European Union accession process from the outset.
Kurtulmuş said security issues on the European continent were also assessed comprehensively during the meeting. He stated that the war in Ukraine, the European Union’s future direction and common security issues affecting all of Europe were discussed.
Palestine and Israel’s actions in the region
Kurtulmuş said the meeting also addressed Israel’s ongoing actions in the region and its inhumane acts against the Palestinian people.
Kurtulmuş thanked Luxembourg for deciding last year to recognize the State of Palestine. He also said he appreciated Luxembourg’s participation in bans and sanctions targeting Israeli products exported from settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Maritime jurisdiction agreement with Libya
The Libya issue was also discussed during the meeting. Kurtulmuş welcomed the Libyan House of Representatives’ adoption of the agreement on the delimitation of maritime jurisdictions signed between Türkiye and Libya on November 27, 2019.
Stating that the agreement was not directed against any third country, Kurtulmuş said it aimed to protect the sovereign rights of Türkiye and Libya in the Mediterranean.
Kurtulmuş expressed hope that the agreement would contribute to establishing peace in the Mediterranean and said the two countries would continue their efforts to protect their sovereign rights.
