Turkish adventurers Onur Çağlar and Halil Özal have embarked on a challenging canoe journey from Istanbul to the Syria border to promote the culture of water sports among young people.
Despite waves and harsh weather conditions, the duo managed to cross the Sea of Marmara and reach the Dardanelles, arriving in the western Turkish province of Çanakkale.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Onur Çağlar stated that their final destination will be Hatay on the Syria border. Çağlar noted that even European countries without a coastline have many water sports enthusiasts and said they aim to set an example for young people with this initiative.
Halil Özal, a former air force non-commissioned officer, said he has been interested in water sports for many years. Özal stated that he bought his first canoe 13 or 14 years ago and started preparing for this initiative a year ago.
The adventurers noted that weather conditions greatly affect their progress and they paddle between 25 and 30 kilometers per day. They plan to continue their journey along the Anatolian coast.
