Fettuh issued a written statement on the resolution adopted ahead of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will be held next week. The General Assembly adopted by 152 votes to 3 a resolution rejecting the measures taken by the United States to prevent Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his delegation from attending the meeting.
Fettuh said the vote demonstrated the rejection of efforts to isolate Palestine internationally or restrict its presence at the United Nations.
Calling on the US administration to reverse its decision and allow Abbas and the Palestinian delegation to attend the General Assembly’s annual session, Fettuh said efforts to pressure and exclude Palestine could not halt its presence on the international stage.
Fettuh said the Palestinian people would continue to defend their national rights, foremost among them the rights to freedom, independence, self-determination and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
Fettuh said the international community no longer accepted double standards or the use of political influence to shield the occupation from accountability, adding that the US administration’s decision conflicted with the United Nations Charter and international obligations.
Fettuh also said the conviction was growing that occupation, annexation, settlement activity, forced displacement and racism could not form the basis of peace or replace the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
The resolution adopted by the General Assembly provides for Mahmoud Abbas, who was denied a US visa, to address next week’s session by video.
