The heavy destruction caused by attacks that have continued in Gaza since October 2023 is visible in updated Google Maps satellite imagery. Around 90 percent of the structures in the area, which is home to approximately 2.4 million Palestinians, are believed to have been destroyed.
Neighborhoods reduced to rubble
The satellite images show vast areas that previously contained dense residential neighborhoods reduced to complete ruin. Thousands of structures have been destroyed, while some neighborhoods have been turned into piles of stones and rubble.
The images show that the destruction has spread across different parts of the Gaza Strip. Thousands of Palestinians who lost their homes are living in tents or trying to return to buildings at risk of collapsing at any moment.
No structures left standing in Rafah
The scale of the destruction in Rafah, in southern Gaza, is also visible in the satellite imagery. The city, which provided shelter to more than 270,000 Palestinians in October 2023, has no surviving structures, according to the images.
Rafah residents have been forcibly displaced, and the city is under Israeli occupation. The heavy damage in densely populated areas of Gaza City is also clearly visible in the imagery.
Death toll from the attacks
Palestinian sources report that more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed in ground, air and sea attacks on Gaza since October 2023. Women and children are said to make up the majority of those killed.
The same Palestinian sources say that 223,000 tons of explosives were dropped on Gaza. The amount is said to be 16 times the quantity of explosives the United States dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945.
In addition to the attacks, thousands of homes in Gaza have been demolished using heavy machinery, and it is alleged that the aim is to forcibly remove Palestinians from the area.
