The US administration invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which will be held in Miami in December.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the invitation at a news conference in New York. Rubio’s remarks came after his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Rubio said Washington also needed to engage with the leaders of countries with which it has disagreements in order to resolve international issues, adding that Putin had been invited to the G20.
The US secretary of state said the summit would give Putin an opportunity to meet not only with US President Donald Trump but also with other world leaders.
Rubio also said Washington hoped Putin would accept the invitation.

Putin-Trump meeting could be on the agenda
Rubio said there was no finalized plan yet for a separate meeting between Trump and Putin if Putin attends the G20.
Rubio said the US was open to contacts with Russia, but added that serious preparations would be necessary for potential high-level meetings to produce concrete results.

The meeting between Rubio and Lavrov also addressed the Russia-Ukraine war and US-Russia relations.
Russia remains a member of the G20, while Putin has not physically attended leaders’ summits in recent years. It remains unclear how the Kremlin will respond to the new US invitation.
