Economic pressure tools may take priority over new airstrikes in the United States' current strategy toward Iran.
US officials say Rubio outlined Washington's Iran policy during recent phone calls with counterparts from allied countries. Rubio is said to have told them that the United States does not currently plan to launch new airstrikes against Iran.
Naval blockade and sanctions options
The US administration could focus on a naval blockade and new sanctions announced by the Treasury Department to increase pressure on Tehran. A US official said Washington had clearly conveyed to its counterparts that it was not planning a new military operation.
The same official assessed that the United States would continue to keep military retaliation on the table if Iran were to strike first.
Mines in the Strait of Hormuz
Another US official described the US Navy's removal of mines from the Strait of Hormuz as a turning point in the conflict. The official argued that the step had largely neutralized one of Iran's important sources of leverage.
Economic options may remain the priority until after the US midterm elections. Military action against Iran could come back into consideration after the elections.
