The United States plans to reduce the number of military aircraft and warships assigned to NATO operations on the European continent. The proposed changes could also impact the alliance's long-range strike capabilities and surveillance activities.
It has been reported that the Washington administration aims to withdraw a missile-launching submarine and an aircraft carrier from Europe as part of its strategic defense planning. This move is expected to lead to a significant reduction in the American military presence in Europe.
Disruptions Affecting Operational Capacity
The plan also includes numerous cruisers and dozens of fighter jets that support the operational missions of the mentioned aircraft carrier. The Pentagon is also considering redeploying one of the two groups of strategic bombers assigned to European defense under NATO to another theater of operations.
If these changes are implemented, air and naval support for NATO operations in Europe will decrease. Surveillance activities are also expected to be negatively affected.
Criticism from the Trump Administration on Defense
The Trump administration argued that European allies do not provide sufficient funding for their own defense capabilities. Washington has systematically criticized European countries for relying heavily on American military protection.
It was reported that Trump directed harsh criticism at NATO countries that did not provide adequate support in the US-Israel partnership's conflict with Iran. The White House also reportedly considered the possibility of a complete withdrawal from the alliance, citing the lack of military support as justification.
