According to a report published by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), approximately 70,000 hectares of land were reduced to ash in the wildfires that occurred in Italy this summer. This figure is equivalent to an area roughly the size of 100,000 football fields.
The report noted that about one-third of the fires broke out in protected areas. Over the last 20 years, the amount of land destroyed by wildfires in Italy has increased by 133 percent.
The WWF report revealed that the situation in other European countries was even more severe. According to the report, 219,000 hectares burned in Spain and 91,000 hectares in France.
WWF European Union Forest Lead Anke Schulmeister-Oldenhove said in a statement regarding the report, "Europe is burning, but while firefighters are desperately spraying water, our leaders are sitting in air-conditioned rooms discussing how much they should water down the European Union's climate and nature laws. The real question should be how much they need to strengthen these laws to prevent future disasters."
