Abdullah Eren Yıldız, an 11th-grade student at Aksaray Şehit Pilot Hamza Gümüşsoy Science High School, has set his sights on reaching the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics through his shooting career.
As a child, Yıldız went to the shooting range to watch his father, Hamdullah Yıldız, compete in air pistol shooting. There, he caught the attention of Hakan Çevik, a national para-shooter with a physical disability. Under Çevik’s guidance, Yıldız was introduced to air rifle shooting. The young athlete improved rapidly and obtained his competition license at the age of 10.
Turkish champion at his first championship
Yıldız became Turkish champion at the first championship he entered. The young shooter has won more than 25 medals and set six Turkish records during his career.
Selected for the national team for the first time in February, Yıldız won a gold medal at the European Air Weapons Championship held in Bulgaria that same month. The young athlete said the national-team process had been stressful and exciting for him, adding that they trained twice a day during the camp.
Third place with his team at the U23 European Championships
Yıldız and his team finished third at the All Events U23 European Shooting Championship, held in Poland from August 1 to 12. He said seeing the Turkish flag raised and hearing the national anthem played in Bulgaria was one of the proudest moments of his career.
Preparing for the European Championships to be held in 2027, Yıldız said his main goal was to qualify for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and win a gold medal at the event.
Support from his father four days a week
Abdullah Eren Yıldız’s father, Hamdullah Yıldız, said his son obtained his license in 2020 and became Turkish champion at the first competition he entered that same year. Hamdullah Yıldız added that his son subsequently achieved a series of strong results.
Continuing to serve as his son’s coach, Yıldız said they trained together four days a week. He said that although they sometimes experienced role confusion as father and son, they managed to overcome it, adding that their goal was to continually raise the bar for success.
