Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu assessed vehicle passage data for Türkiye’s longest road tunnels. Uraloğlu announced that a total of 38.7 million vehicles had passed through the five longest tunnels since they opened.
The Zigana, Ovit, Eğribel, Ilgaz 15 July Independence and Cankurtaran tunnels are among Türkiye’s longest road tunnels. Their combined length reaches 45.4 kilometers.
Uraloğlu said the tunnels provide annual savings of 3.3 billion liras in fuel consumption and travel time.
The number of tunnels rises to 548
The number of tunnels in Türkiye rose from 83 at the end of 2002 to 548. During the same period, the total length of the tunnels increased from 50 kilometers to 881 kilometers.
With this increase, the number of tunnels grew approximately 6.6-fold, while their total length rose approximately 17.6-fold. The 831 kilometers added to the tunnel network were stated to correspond to the road distance between Kilis and Afyonkarahisar.
Transport standards improve on challenging routes
Uraloğlu said high mountains and mountain passes were being crossed through tunnels, adding that they provided safer and uninterrupted transport, particularly in regions with severe winter conditions.
Uraloğlu noted that the tunnels shortened routes, reduced travel times and contributed to safer transport for citizens.
